Solace

Solace is a lyrical early-intermediate piano solo written as a study in portato touch.

Portato used in conjunction with the damper pedal can create a lovely, bell-like effect that sounds quite different from true legato. While the pedal masks some of the separation, the non-legato articulation can still be heard. That’s the kind of portato required in Solace. The piece asks for most of the right hand melodic line to be played portato, but I encourage pianists to experiment. Perhaps try using portato only in the A sections, or only in the B section.

Keep the pace gentle and unhurried. Luxuriate in the breaths between phrases. Rubato is key. I hope you can let the piece wash over you with an air of calmness and serenity.
