Description
Published by Hal Leonard, Sonatina Misteriosa is an intermediate-level sonatina designed to fall easily under the hands. It should be a quick win for students. Helpful fingering is included, and some light, syncopated pedaling is used, except in Movement 3, which requires no pedal.
I. Mysteriously
Written in A minor, this first movement pays homage to classical-era sonatinas by using traditional sonata form and Alberti bass while exploring some more contemporary idioms and harmonies. Rubato can be used freely with the enchanting melody lines that shift between the hands.
II. Unhurried
Composed in C major, this movement is a lyrical, stately contrast to the faster outer movements, both in A minor.
III. Spirited, Spooky
The third movement is a lively, minor 6/8 dance with some fun accidentals in the melody to amp up the spookiness.
Sonatina Misteriosa is published in a contemporary collection of exciting new piano sonatinas featuring works by Glenda Austin, Wayne Bucknor, William Gillock, Daniel Light, Phillip Keveren, Kevin Olson, Mona Rejino, Logan Evan Thomas, and Alexander Zhu.
Here’s a YouTube playlist that includes recordings of most of the pieces.
